Designer: Ted Torgerson Free at Last is a card driven game that simulates the conflict between the Black civil rights movement and the White segregationists in the South in the 1950s and 60s. One player plays the side of civil rights protestors. By playing cards from his hand he can activate leaders to direct protest marches, freedom rides, boycotts and sit ins. He can also play cards as events that will improve his chances of a successful protest, advance the cause of desegregation or recruit more protestors. The other player plays the side of the Segregationists. He will use cards to activate police to arrest the protestors in an attempt to defeat the movement. If he can eliminate the civil rights protestors in enough cities he wins the game. He can also play cards as events that will allow him to use stronger tactics to defeat the movement or corrupt the movement from its philosophy of non-violence. Finally he can play cards to recruit police, ordinary White citizens as supporters, or radical segregationist K units. The K units act outside the control of the segregationist player, but will attempt to eliminate civil rights leaders acting in their state. |
