Game-it-Yourself! - Glossary
Here is a quick glossary of some of the terms you'll encounter while visiting this
site. Note: The definitions used here primarily address their usage in the game
community and may have other definitions in the mainstream.
If you still have questions, feel free to email me at
donald.seagraves@gmail.com.
- BoardGameGeek (BGG)
- The BoardGameGeek is one of the best gaming sites on the net. BGG has
articles, reviews, session reports, game pictures, collection utilities,
and much more. If you have a question, you can probably get it answered here.
- Demo
- Games that are free to download but contain only a stripped-down or lower
quality version of the game. If you enjoy the game, the publisher would love for
you to buy the full version of the game. Demoware is similar to
shareware.
- Donationware
- Games that are free to download. The designer/publisher asks for a small
donation if you like the game.
- Orderware
- Games that are free to download. The publisher requests that, if you enjoy the
game, you purchase another game from them in the future.
- r.g.b. (rec.games.board)
- A USENET newsgroup dedicated to the discussion of board games, though
non-poker-deck card games, wargames, and such are also freely discussed.
R.g.b is unmoderated, so anything can happen. Things usually don't get
out of hand, however.
- Shareware
- Games that are free to download but ask that you purchase the game if you enjoy
it. Sometimes the full game is available for download, while other times only a
portion of the game is available. Shareware is similar to
demoware.
- Spielfrieks (SF)
- Spielfrieks is a Yahoo! group dedicated to the discussion of German-style
games. It is a moderated group, so discussion usually stays on topic.
Spielfreiks is (unfortunately) a private list, but an invite is easily had by
emailing the moderators at spielfrieks-owner@yahoo.com.
Spielfrieks also offers other services to its users, including
an extensive links area, an event calendar, chat, and databases of
gaming groups, events, and stores. Spielfrieks can be found at
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/spielfrieks/.
Spielfrieks has also spun off several related groups:
nigglybits,
KinderSpielfrieks,
Spielfrieks_puerto_rico, and
Spielfrieks-Marketplace,
among others.
- Spielfrieks-marketplace (SF-M)
- Spielfrieks-marketplace was created to serve as a place where people could
freely sell, trade, and buy spielfrieky
games. However, since the moderators (mostly me) cannot guarantee agreements
made on this list, the old adage Caveat Emptor - 'let the buyer beware' -
applies.
